Egidio “Eddy” Balzola was born in Guanabacoa, Cuba, a town known for strong Afro-Cuban folklore and culture. An only child in the midst of a very large, extended family, he was constantly surrounded by a rich and proud culture, and his father and many male uncles inspired him to be a strong and earnest young man. But it was the melodic and elegant voice of his beloved mother that became his deepest influence and encouraged his musical future.

Fast forward, the family eventually settled on the south shores of Miami Beach, Florida, among a hard-working, multi-cultural community. The salt, sea and colorful environment created a fertile canvas and before long Eddy was playing percussion on the garbage can lids and paint cans at their family hardware store. The clave and rhythms came natural to him and remains so, but when an uncle gave him an old acoustic guitar, his heart found its’ soulmate. Balzola had the good fortune of studying music with exceptional teachers including at Miami-Dade college, and he soon began playing and touring with a variety of bands – mostly Tropical, Latin and Show bands. The educators and traveling experiences influenced him to finally develop his own voice – a melodic fusion of blues, jazz and soul seasoned with Afro-Cuban & Caribbean rhythms.

His band ORIENTE debuted in New Orleans at the premier Jazz club, Snug Harbor in 1994. Since then Balzola and his ensembles have consistently performed and toured – from the shores of Key West and Miami to the mountains of Arizona, Las Vegas, New Orleans, the Caribbean and Europe, London and Scandinavia (Iceland and Finland). Over the years his group has opened for Latin jazz icons including Paquito d’ Rivera, Ray Barreto, Dave Valentin, Eddie Palmieri, Arturo Sandoval…New Orleans’ VIPs including Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, the Neville Brothers, Bonerama, Jon Cleary.

Televised features include the PBS International Travel Show “Music Voyager” seen worldwide, and The Food Network | Cooking Channel “Live with Chef Bobby Flay”.
