Oriente

Friday, September 15 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm

A funky world fusion of jazz, blues and soul seasoned with Afro-Cuban & Caribbean rhythms, ORIENTE was started by Cuban guitarist/composer Eddy Balzola and debuted in New Orleans at famed Snug Harbor Jazz Club in the mid-90s. Their hard-driving, melodic Cuban Jazz/Blues style rocked Snug’s experienced audiences attuned to the highest musicality, and since then they’ve kept a steady schedule of festivals, clubs, concerts, casinos and varied events.

ORIENTE has played from the shores of Key West, Miami, and the Mississippi to the mountains of Arizona, the Caribbean and Europe – Bavaria, London and Scandinavia. Highlights include opening for Ray Barretto, The Neville Brothers, Paquito d’ Rivera and Dave Valentin, and appearing at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Fest, SF Jazz & Heritage Festival, The Arts Garage, Le Chat Noir De Salis and Piccolo Spoleto. ORIENTE’s televised features include NPR & PBS International Travel show “Music Voyager” seen worldwide, and Food Network “Live with Chef Bobby Flay”

The band’s 5 th recording, “Soul En Clave”, was just released with much critical response. The six selections are a mix of original compositions and dedications, including the stand-out, 4-part suite titled “ECHOES OF TRANE TRACKS”. The cut pays homage to Coltrane by opening with a chanting Afro-Cuban guaguanco, followed by his brilliant and beautiful composition Naima, flowing into Balzola’s powerful spoken-word poem, and ending with an Equinox finale.
